The key to making your blogs rank better in Google is about consistency and a plan. Writing a blog is an easy thing to do when it comes to web management because generally you will just be uploading your text, images and pressing publish. However, if you want to rank higher on Google and start building that all important SEO there’s a few things to think about.
Keywords and phrases
When marketing agencies say keywords, it’s about considering those niche phrases you’d like to rank better in. For us, we know it’s a minefield to rank number one for ‘marketing agency’ however, if we work to utilise ‘marketing agency Northampton’ we’ve got more of a chance to work on that and target local businesses.
Think locally, regionally and specifically. It is also better to think outside the box AND look at what you’re already ranking for. We all have the odd blog post, service page or even Facebook post that takes off and we’re not sure why. Utilise those engagements to figure out what people are searching for to find you.
Meta descriptions
Ever noticed how on Google, just under the title of the post or page, there’s a little description? These aren’t here just for fun, these are specific descriptions about the page and content. By downloading SEO tools like Yoast (which is free on WordPress) you can alter these descriptions to what you’d like it to appear as on Google.
Consider a focus keyword for that blog and use it in your description. For example, this blog post will have a meta description that includes ‘rank better in Google’ and ‘blogs.’ You don’t always need to include the business name, that is more useful for company news posts.
Slugs – and no, not the insect type
Your slug is the name after your URL. For this post, it is ‘how-to-rank-better-in-google-with-blogs’ Consider what your slug comes out automatically as. Sometimes these are done for you using the title of the post and generally the more concise you are, the better. As you’re looking to rank better in Google, you want to think about what people would naturally search for to find you.
Link and link again
Internal and external linking is the best way to build up your blog posts. Make sure to link to your service pages and previous posts. Also ensure you link to other websites, whether you’re using your connections blog posts, a research study or even just a social networking page.
Keep that link building going and remember to link old blogs to your new one when you get the chance!
