How to build your e-mail marketing lists

It may feel with the GDPR well under way that you have lost a sense of balance on your e-mail marketing lists, but you can re-build this and let’s face it, this way the people/ companies/ organisations sat on your lists will be the ones you want to target instead of being a bulk e-shot which you send around hoping and praying the it gets opened by the right people.

We think GDPR has had a great impact on the quality of the contacts we communicate with via e-shots and mailers. Here’s how you can re-build your lists ethically, while getting good response rates from your target audiences.

Top tips on how to build your mailing list

  1. This may be simple but make sure you have a ‘sign up to our newsletter’ button on every page within your website – the more people see great content, the more you’re likely to win them over by them volunteering their information to you so that they can read fresh, upcoming content more frequently. Reading is about enjoyment so make sure you sell yourself on your website for this to work!
  • Host an event – pick a topic that suits your market, get a market leader/ influencer or professional that people will learn from. This way people will want to know what’s happening in your company. Make sure you’re asking for them RSVP via e-mail though or you won’t capture that all important e-mail address legitimately.
  • Giveaways work a treat and if you haven’t used one already, you will see the benefits straight away. This also works with discount codes. Asking people to sign up to your newsletter to receive a promo code or to enter a competition to current customers is also a really good way to increase your sales. Ensure that this has an opt-in button though and do not automatically take data.

According to a recent report on Business.com– acquiring new customers costs five times more than selling to a current customer and current customers spend 67% more on average a year than those who are new to your business. These stats are worth bearing in mind!
  • Engage all of the above with social media – provide an aesthetically pleasing link to your website opt-in page using customer incentives will get your website the traffic it needs, providing you have the correct following, but please make sure your website is ready to go and is optimised to its fullest capacity without pop-ups flying around the site everywhere – we all know there’s nothing more annoying.
  • Reward loyalty – send your loyal e-mail followers discount codes and ‘free shipping’ deals. Your target audience is likely friends with other people within your target audience bracket and word of mouth is one of the strongest forms of marketing! Who knows, maybe even a ‘refer a friend’ scheme might do wonders for you and your business.
