The first questions you might ask here is, what is a Twitter chat? Is this another thing we need to add into the ever-growing marketing plan?

Simply put, a Twitter chat is a conversation around one unique hashtag. The hashtags are used frequently to join a conversation between people with the same interest so that they have a platform to easily discuss opinions and share best practice.

Make it Relevant

The best way to engage people in a Twitter chat is to create a topic that is right up your audience’s street. It should not relate directly back to your own products or services because people are always a little reluctant to get involved in a discussion when they feel they may be being sold something.

It’s also important to ask people what they want and what their opinion is – this will only help you understand your audiences wants and needs a little better.

Examples of topics could be as follows:

  • Work with animals? Talk about their health issue so they are still relevant to you, but it is one of the main concerns of your customers and suppliers.
  • A hairdresser? Talk about hair treatments and hairstyles for summer.
  • Retail? Discuss this seasons trends and ask people for their opinions.
  • Own a garage? Talk about road conditions, types of cars and get a discussion flowing about the price of petrol.

The point is, if you show you care about the things that matter to your audience, they are more likely to trust you in the future.

Use influencers

Is your company associated with a key opinion leader? Rather than asking them to write page upon page of content so that you can prove how amazing you are as a company, put them in front of your audience on a Twitter chat and ask them to discuss a specific topic. People love putting their opinions forward and engaging with people that they may aspire to or respect within the industry.

Let’s face it, this is a much cheaper and more efficient way of running a webinar.

Share your expertise

Share your own voice within a Twitter chat even if it’s not you who has set it up. Get involved and show you know what you are talking about – this will turn peoples heads and make you more reputable. Our advice is, if you know what to say go for it but maybe keep quiet if you aren’t 100 per cent sure what it is you mean.

This is likely to increase your Twitter following and put you in front of an organic audience.

Learn

One last point, the best thing that can come from you being involved with Twitter chats is that you will learn from your audience.

Gather the information from a chat and do with it what you wish but Twitter, Facebook and Google analytics only give you the numbers and statistics – for you to really understand, our advice is to get involved and listen.
