Five easy ways to grow your Twitter following…
As of December 2010 Twitter had 330 million active users, 1.3 billion new users and that doesn’t even include the 550 million people that visit the Twitter site but don’t sign in. (Twitter stats from Brandwatch)
There is a huge market and we can see why people want to chase it but how?
Here are five was to grow your Twitter following:
Follow others – Following others is a great way to ensure that you are targeting the right audience and collecting followers from your target audience.
Don’t be afraid to check out who is following your competitors and even follow their followers. It is a lengthy process but it will be worth it as you are collecting users who are already interested in your product or service.
Take a look on popular hashtags that relate to your company and start to follow people who engage with those hashtags as this will really drill down on your target audience.
Respond to Tweets from larger accounts – Larger accounts who are similar or within the same industry and have a larger following and will have followers that you want to engage with.
We aren’t saying go to your competitor and start engaging with their customers as this may get you blocked but what we do suggest is that when larger accounts have a good tweet, something that may not have anything to do with your products and services – make sure you comment, like and engage with their audience to grow your own. You never know who may see you and appreciate your advice.
Make your profile engaging – This is really important and there are two aspects to consider.
- Make sure you have a professional profile picture, bio and you have clearly displayed your website and any contact details so you are visible. Add your location too so that people can find you when they are searching for a ‘local plumber’ for example. Don’t give too much away on your profile though – just enough to make the visitor want to know more and get in touch with you directly.
- Add content which engages your audience. Send out non-related content which is whitty, short and simple. Ask rhetorical questions and ask your audience questions that get them thinking. Sometimes the best content is content that doesn’t sell a product or a service. Have you ever heard of anyone going viral because they were selling ‘10 buckets for £1.00’.
Embed tweets into blogs – If you have a strong following on your blog site, ensure you start embedding your Tweets on your blog to ensure that those users follow you. This is a quick win because you know that the people you are engaging already love what you do. Don’t just stop with sharing your Tweets on your blogs, share on your website and other social media platforms.
Share relevant news – Another quick win. Share relevant and current news with your audience so that they can engage with you on topics they are interested in. Use hashtags that they might follow and you will be surprised about the following you generate from this activity.
