Beat the latest news feed change, by using our top tips to increase engagement on Facebook.
As if we didn’t need another blow to our Organic Posts, Facebook announced in January they were changing the news feed algorithm meaning we see less ads and more from our friends and family.
As a business it is so frustrating having spent so much time focussing on gaining likes and engagement when Facebook was a huge part of your marketing.
With a significant focus needed on generating ‘long comments’ (the new deciding metric), it is more important than ever to produce engaging content. We have 5 great tips to help you to get your Facebook back on track and beat the algorithm.
- Find Viral Content
This is my favourite and most effective tip. Facebook loves Viral Content and it’s part of even the biggest of brand’s strategies. Take at look at Boohoo’s page. They have a massive 2,641,039 likes yet constantly use a mix of viral memes and videos that they know their audience will love. Their viral posts receive the most engagement and they capitalise on this by tagging their products underneath the viral post. Out-with the viral posts their other posts suffer like us too.
Just search for the latest memes, videos, funny images on facebook that may relate to your niche. Follow popular pages e.g Food Envy, Viral Thread and search You Tube too.
BuzzSumo is another great tool for content strategy and lets you identify what content is working well in your industry and who the major influencers are.

- Invite Engagers to like your page
Using Viral Content as part of your strategy means more engaged users and if you have the right content and know your audience your posts should start getting more likes, tags and comments.
When someone likes your post click on their name and invite them to like your page so from the right viral post you get huge exposure, more engagement and FREE page likes….Result!
- Know your Audience
For any engaged Facebook page you need to know who your audience is so that you can serve them the right content. What sex are they? What age are they? Where do they live? Do they have children?
This may seem a tad creepy but it works! Cut out a photo of someone that is similar to your target customer. Call her Suzie or John or whatever you like. 😊
Think of them when you are posting your content. Will Suzie like this post? Will Suzie laugh at this post? Will Suzie tag her friends in this? It’s a great way of getting in the mind of your customer.
Use your Facebook Analytics to digger deep into your demographics data too.
- Create Animated Polls
Polls are a great way to engage our audience and Facebook announced in November 2018 the launch of animated GIF polls.
Get your audience engaged by getting them to vote on something related to your niche e.g. Tea or Coffee? Facebook or Twitter? etc.
To create a Facebook GIF poll, go to your Facebook page and click the Create a Poll option on your status box. You can upload your own photos or GIFS or use Facebook’s collection linked to giphy.com.
It’s another fantastic way to increase engagement without spending a penny.
- Don’t Give Up Posting
Engagement on Facebook is the main goal however don’t give up Posting when you don’t see results.
Remember that not all of us like or comment on a post when we like something so ensure that you keep tracking your website’s analytics too.
