When it comes to SEO we all know that the main aim is to rank highly on the top pages of Google for your keywords. Choosing your keywords can be tricky however – it’s not just about ranking for your brand name but also the products, services and localised nature you need to consider. So how do you choose what keywords and phrases to rank for? We have you sorted!
What are keywords?
Keywords are singular or small phrased words that cover your intention. These will be the phrases that people will be searching for on Google. They are used to match the aims on your website and on a localised scale, can help narrow down your business when people are looking for a local service.
A great keyword can help your performance on Google. Examples of keywords for us at Onefoursix would be ‘Digital marketing Northampton, SEO Northampton, Social media management, web design Northampton.’
Look at what Google is saying
When you use Google search engine you’ll notice that once you start typing any word or phrase, other ideas will appear below. Think about how you can appear for these top searches, it’s also worth thinking outside of the box. Just because you might want to appear for a certain phrase, is that how your company is perceived? You might be trending already for something like ‘Design interior Northampton’ when your business is ‘web design’. Think about what your website says and how it’s attracting its customers.
Popularity!
It’s what any keyword comes down to – is it being searched? You can check this out through Google Keyword Planner to assess what kind of traction your phrases may receive. If you’re aiming for a new keyword you’re not currently ranking for then look at what has the right kind of search for it. You’ll see in these tools what kind of number these searches receive which will benefit your campaigns. For example there’s no point trying to rank for something that’s so low on searches however, if it’s niche and you have a brand that could work for it – attempt it, but don’t single yourself to small campaigns.
Be patient!
You need to be patient when it comes to implementing SEO. There is no set ‘time frame’ to a successful campaign, we advise weeks or months but it can be shorter or longer depending on your competition and over all website efforts. SEO isn’t just based on the one keyword but a multitude of options such as your Domain Authority, your formatting, website speed and many other factors.
