SEO: Tips for small businesses

There is so much you can do with SEO without any expert knowledge or experience. It can often be a little complex but when using some of the basic tools that surround SEO you can usually muddle through on your own with the help of some online resources such as blogs and videos.

The other great part is you also won’t need to spend a lot of money to get some of the basic SEO tactics up and running. So, how can you get on the road to a successful SEO campaign. We look at some of the elements, tools and information to get you up and running which won’t boggle your mind too much (we hope!).

Google Business Account

First and foremost, get yourself a Google Business Account up and running. It is completely free and will give you a head start when search engines bring back local search results.

Google Search Console

Using Google Search Console helps you report and measure your sites traffic and performance, fix issues and make your site shine in Google Search results.

Signing up for this will also allow you to easily optimise your content with search analytics, get your content on Google and get regular alerts on issues and fix your site.

When you understand your audience inside and out, you will have the opportunity to grab their attention and Google Search Console is the best place to help you understand.

Research the market

It may seem obvious but missing out this step can often cause huge issues so make sure you are using Google to research your market and look at what other companies within your industry are doing so that you can always be one step ahead of the game.

Industry news

Keep up with trends regarding industry news and use these trends to implement them into your marketing plan. Use the content you create for social media, blogs and help pages on your website. These keywords will be used across the web so make sure you latch onto them while the words are trending so you get some additional coverage. This will also give you good SEO feedback because it will show your site is accurate and relevant – something SEO crawlers are always on the lookout for!

URL structure

One of the easiest things to do as an SEO beginner is to ensure that the links you create for your website are clear, short and concise. Your audience should be able to guess the topic of your blog or website page due to the link you provide them.

Internal linking/ back linking

Use links to take your customers/ audience back to other pages throughout your website. Use relevant industry links and make your site a source of accurate, reliable information and it will almost certainly be used on Google. This does take time to build up the content though so be patient, these things won’t happen overnight.
