Is there still a place for Twitter?

March 2006 was when Twitter was founded just after Facebook in 2004 and since then its popularity has dwindled so it’s understandable that people question if there is a place on social media for Twitter.

Twitter still holds more than 326 million monthly active users and over 500 million tweets are sent each day. So, to say there isn’t a place for Twitter is definitely a slight over exaggeration.

We take a look into why Twitter is definitely not dead but instead, we’ve come up with three important reasons why Twitter should still be on your marketing strategy radar.

Engagement

Twitter is still one of the top five social media channels in 2019 and it continues to thrive. With 71 per cent of Twitter users stating that they use the social media network to get their news, make sure you’re always providing them with short, sharp, snappy and informative snippets of information relevant to their needs as a reader. Keep links short too with items like Bit.ly.

Engagement may also not be in the form of comments or likes largely on Twitter, but it is used in other ways. For example, 2 billion searches are made on Twitter a day. So, even if people aren’t actively tweeting, they are certainly on the hunt for information. With this in mind, try not to be too disheartened if the engagement isn’t shown in the form of comments and likes on your Twitter statistics but focus on the reach statistics instead.

Hashtags

It’s well known that hashtags increase engagement. Tweets that include hashtags can result in as much as a 1,065% increase in engagement compare to a similar tweet without hashtags according to Hubspot.

Hashtags do not work on Facebook in the same way that they do on Twitter or other social media sites such as Instagram and however, they are extremely important to get your message out there to targeted audiences. We personally feel that even though engagement isn’t as high on Twitter, it’s a great way to target specific groups of people with similar interests which is something you’re unable to do as well on Facebook. You can’t really over-do it on Twitter when it comes to sharing news. If you’re actively engaging and sharing, then there will always be other content feeding through.

Be local

One of the biggest benefits of using Twitter is that if you have a local business or a local branch, you can include this location to your tweets to make it known by your followers. Another advantage is that you can share useful local information, offer solutions to local social issues and support local events or causes. All these efforts will create a sound awareness of your business and strengthen your networking opportunities within the local area.

In conclusion if you are considering whether there is a place for Twitter within your marketing strategy, you must consider why people use Twitter and how you can add value to their usage.
