SEO: Keyword grouping explained

In a new series of blog articles, we take a look at Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) for beginners to keep you up to date with the ever changing digital world. In our latest blog we explain keyword grouping.

Keyword grouping is also known as a keyword niche, a keyword cluster and a keyword theme. It is a small, targeted list of specific related keywords that can be used to drive paid and organic search marketing strategies.

Keyword grouping is extremely important for many aspects of SEO marketing. Once you have a list of keyword groups, you can then input these onto your content management system (CMS) – basically the platform where you build your website (i.e. WordPress) or on ad campaigns such as Google AdWords or Facebook advertising.

To put it simply, in the SEO world, keywords are words or phrases that match up with search engine results or that match advertisements that appear when a customer undertakes an online search.

In recent years Google’s search algorithm has outgrown the method of optimisation and now uses a tool which scans websites – Google calls this method ‘crawling’ – and this process allows the website to be scanned for key words so that Google can ensure it’s relevant to what people are searching for. This also has an impact on how high up the search engine your page link will appear.

Keyword grouping is an optimisation method used to segment target search terms into groups which are relevant to each page of the website.

To enhance key word performance you can use a number of tools to help you perform the fully automated process.

KeywordGrouper Pro™

This tool makes it easy to take any keyword list and analyse them perfectly into related groups. Best of all, this tool is free.

This grouper creates tight lists which allow you to group words together that will improve your SEO and any pay per click (PPC) campaigns you have running.

SpyFU Keyword Grouper

SpyFu allows you to add search data which will automatically organise your keywords and give you estimated volume, cost per click and clicks per day for the keywords entered.

This tool also allows you to export all the data into an Excel, CSV or PDF version so that you can refer back to it at a later date.

Semrush

This tool is the most popular by far and is used by a number of popular websites across the globe. It’s extremely simple and easy to use also.

Firstly you enter a seed keyword which will give you millions of related queries organised by groups and subgroups. Then, filter the received keywords by metrics or include/ exclude keywords that aren’t relevant.

Once you’ve taken the steps above, you can then create your own keyword lists and analyse them for a definitive keyword set and finally export the key word batched onto Excel for ease of use.

Overall, creating a keyword strategy will allow you to improve your SEO and PPC workflow and get a better understanding of how each type of keyword is working for you and your business.
